About

Kamarul earned his Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture from Iowa State University in 1985. After a brief stint in private practice, in 1989 he joined Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia as a lecturer in Landscape Architecture Department. He continued his studies and received a Master's degree in Landscape Architectural Studies from the University of Sheffield, England in 1995. During his 12 years of service with the department he was head of program for 4 years and created a new degree program called Bachelor of Park and Amenity Management (Honours).

He became the foundation-head of the newly formed Department of Park and Amenity Management at UiTM in 2001-2003. In 2004, he was offered a scholarship to study for his PhD in Environmental Management at the University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia.

On 18 June 2009 he was conferred the doctoral degree. In 2011 he was re-appointed as the Head of Program in the Park Department.

His research interests are in the fields of cultural landscape, park and heritage conservation.

Kamarul is active in professional and public services. He was Council Member of the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) in 1992-93 and 1998-2003. He sat on the Landscape Planning Committee of the Shah Alam City Council in 1990-1992. Currently he is Honorary Secretary of the Institute for a two-year term (2010-2012).

He was Chairman of the Parent-Teacher's Association (PIBG) TTDI Jaya Secondary School in Shah Alam between 2008-2011 and Chairman of the Community-based Rehabilitation Center (PDK) also in Shah Alam. He is founder of an e-conservation group (myparks) based in Malaysia.
